In the Kitchen

IN THE KITCHEN

There is always someone, somewhere in the kitchen cooking up something. It might be a full meal, cookies or maybe even some play dough! This page is dedicated to that someone. Here you'll find interesting new recipes, old recipes and maybe some forgotten recipes. We'll learn together about canning, freezing dehydrating. We'll learn how to bake and cook together. We might even learn some tid bits on how to organize the kitchen drawer or maybe how to  do away with that kitchen junk drawer. Notice I said "maybe"   What you'll always find is me in that kitchen cooking and sharing my ups and downs of culinary life as I know it

You know, I'm not sure what tab I should put this entry.  I could put it under the tab "In the yard" because that is where my garden is, but soon the food will be in my kitchen, so....

My garden is doing fair. I've been onions quite some time now,  gotten some peppers in. The squash and beans and tomatoes are full of blooms.  The herb garden is doing great and i haven't even planted the cucumbers yet. But, that is a whole 'nother story.  Anyway, here is some of it in all it's glory... And yes, I know I needed to water bad when these photos were taken. See the drip lines? I turned them on right after I finished being a shutter bug.

Views of what's in my kitchen pantry.

The best part of waking up...
My son's favorite breakfast cereal. Mine too.

My favorite breakfast cereal, with eggs.

And every Native Texan has this...

 and this...

and this...
 and this (pintos)
If you make bread you've got this.   Or some other kind of flour(s)
For  biscuits and other baking needs - to go along with the flour.

And last but not least, since this is my son's fav-o-rite snack
and being the choosy mama I am...I choose Jif!

My Mama's Kitchen

Imagine this table, laden with good southern, home cooking
(only with a couple of leaves and bench in back and a high chair on the corner)
sitting in front of a bright window...
in a kitchen much like this one and you've got the kitchen
I grew up in.
Below are  some recipes my mama used during those days I ate at a red chrome table in a kitchen like these pictured.

BUTTERMILK PIE

2 cups buttermilk
2 cups sugar
½ cup flour or flour to thicken
3 eggs
1 teaspoon soda
pinch of salt
vanilla

Mix all together and cook until thick.  Then pour into baked pie crust.  Beat the egg whites and put on top and brown
