In the yard

IN THE YARD

Birds, basket ball hoops, vegetables, swing sets, flowers, pests, pets, landscapes, fences, buildings, garden tools,  jungle gyms, chickens, seeds, greenhouses, chicken houses, out houses,  and just about anything else you can think of that is  found in the yard, field or garden, is what this page is all about.

Last week three new banty pullets joined the feathered flock. They are baby chicks so naturally they are in the brooder and will be separated from the rest of the girls for several weeks. That makes a grand total of 4 bantys the boy now has. He has named them. They are Itty Bitty, Scrappy Do, Dizzy and Itchy.  I love the names, only a kid could come up with such cute names for such cute and individual birds.   Pictures later.

See The Chicks!

They aren't the cute little round balls of fuzz going cheep! cheep! like they were in the photos below. My goodnes those little pullets grow fast!

See the tail side of the little white chicken on the right? That is Kevin's pet banty (bantam). He named her Itty Bitty.  The pullet of the left is an Ameraucana. They are the chickens often referred to as Easter Chickens because they lay green eggs.
Yes! I love green eggs and ham, Sam I am.

I love the colors and markings of this Ameraucauna.
It's getting late and time for all of us chickens to go to bed.
I mean to roost...what ever!

The Chicks are Here!
I've had the chicks now for nearly a week. They are so cute!

They eat, drink, sleep and play.

They are a tight bunch.

They  like to look at their reflection on the brooder wall.
Sometimes they peck at their reflection. RIR are aggressive, I'm told.

Rhode Island Red Hen

 Sunday, March 27, 2011

I'm really getting excited because day after tomorrow I will be picking up the first 6 chicks, then on Thursday I will be picking up 6 more chicks. I would love to have about 20 hens but I am going to start out with a dozen since this is my first time raising chickens.

I'm starting out with two breeds. Ameraucana's and Rhode Island Reds. I'm getting all hens because I just want layers. I might consider breeding later.  I'll have to see how this all goes first. Soon I'll have all green and brown eggs in my refrigerator. I'm hoping that I will soon buy my last eggs from the grocery store!

They say talking to plants makes them grow. Hmmm...I wonder if clucking to hens will make them lay faster?

THE GARDEN IS PLANTED!
No, this is not a picture of my garden.  My garden doesn't even look this good, yet. You see we plant from seed so there is nothing but dirt.  Now, I did transplant a few tomatoes and peppers but they are so tiny they would look about like the plants in this picture of someones garden.
My garden is a raised bed garden and this year we added a smaller herb garden onto the vegetable garden. I added a few extras, other than herbs to that garden. Like a background of Hollyhocks. and a few marigolds up front and some other veggies.  In the smaller garden we planted parsley, cilantro, tarragon, chives, onions and garlic, carrots, dill, oregano, rosemary, and some more.  In the vegetable garden we planted tomatoes and peppers, of course, beans, okra, yellow squash, zucchini, egg plant and a couple of others. (I'm tired)  I'll post a photo of my planted dirt later.

February 25, 2011

I took a trip to Sam's Club yesterday and of all things guess what I walked out of that place with?  Yep, you guessed it, a couple of heirloom roses.  I love roses (doesn't everyone?) and I hope these are like the roses that I remember as a child that my aunt had in front of her house.  I only have one problem. I don't know where in the yard I am going to put them!  Don't worry though. I'll figure it out. They might look nice in the same flower garden that I have the jasmine vine, esperanza and heirloom snapdragons in.... yeah, I might, now mind you I said might plant them there.

This reminds me of the farm land in the Texas Panhandle, where I grew up.

I like green eggs.  They are so creamy and rich. Yum!

These are Ameraucana chikens, they lay green eggs.
Oh, did I tell you I am getting chickens this year.
I

This is not my place. It is near me though. This is what the Texas Hill Country
will look like in a couple of months.  If we get some rain, that is.
Flowers need the rain and rain has been sparse in these here parts.
